The baggage handling system at Dubai International Airport is the longest conveyor system in an airport, measuring 63 km. It features a combination of conventional belt conveyors and tray conveyors, and it was installed by Siemens and put into service in 2008.
The longest single flight conveyor in the world is officially located in the Boddington Bauxite Mine in Western Australia. Single flight denotes a single continuous system for the whole length without any load transfers. A 31-kilometer (19-mile) conveyor feeds a 20-kilometer (12-mile) conveyor in this cable belt conveyor system. An alternative to the more traditional idler belt arrangement are cable belt conveyors. Cable belt conveyors are supported by two endless steel cables, or steel wire rope, which are in turn supported by idler pulley wheels, as opposed to operating on top of idlers. Through the challenging Darling Ranges, this system supplies bauxite to the Worsley Alumina mill.
